Plan B

As anyone who’s ever spent any amount of time around me knows, Halloween is by far my favorite holiday.  I love the spooky decorations, the full moon and especially the costumes!  I guess growing up in Key West has a lot to do with my attraction to the holiday.  I grew up in a town where the entire population dressed in full costume for the occasion.  There was nothing odd about a grown man dressed as a clown riding his bike down the street.  In fact, tens of thousands of people flock to Key West for the illustrious Fantasy Fest Celebration that takes place at this time, every year.  As a child I can remember being dropped of at school by my dad who was dressed as the Lion from The Wizard of Oz, a Hippie and even an Alien (just to name a few of his incredible costumes), on his way to a costume contest at the bank.  My sisters and I participated in Halloween costume contests at school, Children’s Day and even our church.  It was something we looked forward to every year and would plan our costumes for, months in advance.
After moving to Nashville nearly 10 years ago, I began to appreciate the uniqueness of growing up in a place like Key West.  When I dressed my 10 month old daughter as a Geisha last year, the people around here thought I was crazy.  She’d have fit right in, back home in Key West.
I had an extravagant costume planned for her this year.  Although I was a little late placing my order, I did pay for 2-day shipping and fully expected its arrival this past Wednesday.  Much to my disappointment, Ava’s costume did not arrive in time for our community costume contest.  I was one sad mama.  Instead, we used a cute little dress I picked up at a consignment sale a couple months back, and a fab wig I found at our local costume store.  Check out my girl dressed as Little Orphan Annie!
